Counseling Continuing Education - School Counselors

From lack of support at home to trouble at school, children can go through some hard things in their young lives. Sometimes these kids need a fresh face to help them get through these rough patches. This is where their school counselor comes in.

What is a school counselor? A school counselor is a teacher who has been professionally trained and licensed to counsel the children in various situations. Many times this helps with a student's school success. The earlier the intervention starts, the better their education can be, so most professional counselors begin their counseling career with elementary school kids and work with kids up through the high school level. These professionals have a minimum of a master's degree in counseling and meet the minimum requirements that are required by the state in which they practice. This licensure often includes yearly counseling continuing education courses.

For many of these kids, this counseling that they receive helps them in their personal, academic, and social situations. Many different counseling continuing education programs are available to help you reach your highest potential so you can help your students reach theirs. The best thing that a school counselor can do is help the students succeed by helping to create a safe environment for troubled children and make the school communities better by instilling a culture of prevention. For a counselor to be the most successful, it is recommended by the American School Counselor Association is that there be one counselor per 250 students.

Counseling programs that are offered to schools help the student develop their social, personal and academically for their futures. Services are offered to schools, parents, staff, and the community in the forms of curriculum, which are lessons that are specially made to help the students develop the skills that will help meet each student's needs. It also provides services for prevention and intervention as well as ISP's to help the students meet their yearly goals. Counseling continuing education classes can help you learn how to prepare those ISP's for individual students.
School counseling programs include counseling for individual students, teachers and their families, community resource referrals, psychiatric help, and intervention. These counselors are taught ways to help keep these meetings confidential so that intervention can take place quickly and confidentially.

Most U.S. public schools require the counselor to have advanced degrees in topics such as Human Growth and Development, Group and Individual Counseling, Social and Cultural Foundations, Testing, Professional Orientation, and Career Development, just to name a few. Licensure and renewal programs in all these subjects are offered through counseling continuing education classes.
